GREAT ZIMBABWE RUINS

An ancient city believed to be the capital of the Kingdom of Zimbabwe, in the late Iron Age, you will find its ruins just outside the town of Masvingo, in Zimbabwe’s midlands. It is believed that the settlement’s construction started in the 11th century and continued for over 300 years, entirely built of stone, the ruins that remain stretch over an area of 1,800 acres. Great Zimbabwe’s ‘Great Enclosure’ is an awe-inspiring walled feature of the ruins and famous from many thousands of photographs taken by visitors over the years. Important archeological finds were made amongst the ruins, making a visit to these ancient structures fascinating.

KHAMI RUINS DAY TRIPS

Just outside the city of Bulawayo, 22km to the west, is a smaller set of settlement ruins which are very similar in construction to those found at Great Zimbabwe, and is a must see if Great Zimbabwe is on your activity list, as Khami’s history compliment’s that of the Great ruins, showing different aspects of our country’s ancient history and peoples. Khami makes a great half day activity, which leaves enough time for travelers to experience more of Bulawayo City, such as the Railway Museum, National Art Gallery & National History Museum, before retiring to one of our accommodation options.

HIKING MOUNT NYANGANI

Not for the faint hearted or inexperienced hiker, Mount Nyangani, found in the Nyanga National Park in the Eastern Highlands, is the highest mountain in Zimbabwe at an elevation of 2,592 metres above sea level at its highest point. Great myth surrounds this mountain, and it is always recommended that permission from the local village elders be sought before attempting to climb the mystical peaks. It’s peak can be reached within 1-3 hours by a hiker of average fitness, during which one needs to be aware of the fast changing weather and also take care not to leave the designated pathways. The views from the top of the surrounding areas is breath taking and well worth the effort.
